Science plays an important role in our society and impacts on every aspect of our lives. The media are an efficient way to inform and educate a large and broad audience about science. Apart from school education newspapers, TV and the internet are the second major source for people to learn about science. This is why scientists should work with journalists to ensure that the information about science in the media is accurate, up-to-date and understandable. Today media relations are an integral part of every successful science institution and being able to communicate science effectively is an important transferrable skill for every scientist.

Content: This 1 day seminar covers the basics of media work. Topics include:

• Why should scientists communicate with journalists? The value of media communication for science
• Defining the target audience: who are ‘the media’? An overview of the media landscape
• Key principles of communication to a non specialist
• Arousing interest: making science interesting and understandable for journalists
• Different instruments of media communication:
• Press releases
• Press Conferences
• Interviews

Target group: Doctoral students from disciplines across natural sciences, the examples presented will have an emphasis on life sciences. The seminar is appropriate for students who would like to learn about science communication to acquire additional, transferrable skills for their research careers, but also for those considering a career in media relations or science journalism after their PhD studies
